External Affairs Director
Overview
The National Academy (www.nationalacademy.org) is a 185-year-old honorary association of artists and architects, a museum of American art, and an art school. Founded in 1825 and modeled after the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the National Academy was established for the purpose of education and exhibition, and is committed to the promotion of American art and architecture. The Academys collection of over 7,000 nineteenth through twenty-first century works form a veritable survey of American art. The Nation Academy is located on prestigious Museum Mile in the Carnegie Hill district.
Position Summary
The National Academy Museum & School of Fine Arts is looking for an energetic, organized and self-motivated individual to strategize, manage and implement all communications, marketing and public relations. The Director of External Affairs will head a newly formed department, will be a player in executing a five year strategic plan, and will develop a new visitor orientation center. The External Affairs Director is a member of the senior management team and reports to the Director.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)
Develop the Academys brand and image insuring integrity in all digital and print channels.
Oversee the Academys on-line presence and leverage new media (website, social networking, blogging, interactive channels, etc.).
Oversee strategy and implementation of all public relations.
Manage the development of all press and promotional materials, digital and print, in support of Museum exhibitions, School classes and programs, and public education activities.
Manage the production of exhibition catalogs and other Academy publications.
Manage relationships with and oversee the work of external vendors, contractors, consultants and other independent contractors.
Oversee strategy and implementation of acquiring and maintaining members and friends.
Manage communication with National Academicians.
Manage the visitor center to include content and staffing.
Qualifications
Bachelors or higher degree in marketing, advertising, communications or a related field
At least 7 years of experience in a marketing/communications environment; non-profit organization experience especially with a cultural institution highly desirable.
Ability to strategize yet implement as necessary.
Solid understanding of the use of technology and the internet to enhance communications and engage audiences.
Ability to identify and assess emerging technologies and a comfort and aptitude for learning these new technologies.
Demonstrated experience using new media tools.
A demonstrated design and aesthetic sensibility.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Experience with advertising media and print production including direct mail.
Excellent computer skills, including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and Constant Contact.
Ability to work in a dynamic and changing nonprofit environment with limited resources.
Highly motivated and creative with a strong sense of initiative.
A demonstrated ability to manage a small department with diverse responsibilities.
Salary Minimum salary $110,000
